As previously reported, the 10 CWU Health & Safety Forums wrote to the Union’s General Secretary asking for a meeting to discuss the Re-Design project with regard to the needs of the Union to be able to secure a robust and leading Health and Safety structure in order for the CWU to defend against the inevitable attacks on the health safety and welfare of its members and to promote and lobby parliament for improvements in appropriate legislation as the Union’s Health, Safety and Environment Department has done so for many years.
The Forum members presented the results of both the 38 Degrees Petition to the TUC urging them to “strengthen trade union partnerships and put prime focus on individual unions to prioritise and increase focus on their individual H&S departments & structures, this is in readiness for post Brexit Britain and it's workforce”, and also the Survey conducted by the H&S Community into the need to ensure the Union maintains and strengthens Health & Safety structures within the CWU. Some of the concerns expressed at the meeting were about participation by the H&S Community at the special conference on Re-Design in November given that the SOC have ruled out any motions being submitted by the H&S Forums, the future of the Health & Safety Department Now that the dialogue on Health & Safety and Re-Design has been opened up with this meeting with the General Secretary, Dave Ward, it is hopeful that Health & Safety structures within the CWU will flourish and that some of the main issues concerning the Union Safety Reps, Branch H&S Co-ordinators, and Area Safety Reps will be addressed and their suggestions and ideas implemented. Further meetings may well occur prior to the Re-Design Conference in November and Unionsafety will bring you the details and outcomes when available.

The meeting took place earlier this week, and was by all accounts a good meeting with all participants being able to put forward their evidence and points of view.
